Why?

So why am I doing this?

Well, predominantly I'm doing this walk for my beautiful son. After a 5yr process, he received an NHS autistic diagnosis in June 2023 (age 7). It was a hard road, because my gorgeous boy had been through the mill his whole life. Starting with life saving heart surgery (which was a shock) at only 11 days old and continuing to have many medical interventions throughout his life. We had to differentiate trauma traits from autistic traits and with Covid being bang in the middle of the process, as most people know, it caused a build up of wait lists and staff shortages.

I've been wanting to do something to raise funds for charities that help support people like my son for years, but imposter syndrome kicked my butt, because without the diagnosis it felt like I didn't have the right to do anything like this (I know that sounds silly but I'm sure there are parents out there that can empathise with this).

This walk starts on March 26th and ends April 2nd, which means it ends on the start of 'Autism Acceptance Week'. On this date I will have walked 80,000 steps for autism. The point of this walk is to challenge yourself to imitate what it is like to walk in an autistic person's shoes for a week by pushing yourself to do something challenging to represent the challenges an autistic person may go through in their daily lives.

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far and to any future donations. I am entirely grateful and will be blogging my walk both on here and over on my stories on Instagram @themumtheboyandthedog. Thank you for following along.

We are a household that does NOT support the puzzle piece for symbolism or 'Light It Up Blue'. We also use 'condition first' language i.e. autistic person rather than person with autism.

I'm walking for Zachary!

I’m raising funds for autism! Please sponsor me today! I’m taking part in the Walk for Autism challenge. I’ll be walking 10,000 steps a day from 26 March to 2 April. Please sponsor me. Anything helps . Walk for Autism is a fundraising challenge run by Autism Initiatives Group. Autism Initiatives Group is working towards a world where every person on the autism spectrum has the support they need to thrive, every opportunity to fulfil their potential and a supportive, inclusive community to live in.
