Last day and thank you

Today is the last day of Walk for Autism!

I wanted to say a big thank you to you for your kind and generous donations. I can’t believe how much money you have helped raise and I am really grateful to have received so much support.

You are donating for an excellent and very important cause. I wanted to raise awareness for autism as the cause is very close to my heart, due to both my personal and professional life experiences.

My sister is mummy to our beautiful Nahla-Rae, who is on the autistic spectrum, communicates non-verbally and has sensory processing disorder. As you can imagine, every day brings challenges for Nahla, as she has to navigate a world that is largely built for neurotypical minds. It is also incredibly difficult for my sister, who holds so much uncertainty as to what Nahlas future may look like. What many mothers may expect to be a given for their children, Charlotte has to question - will my daughter ever be able to be independent, will she live the vibrant fulfilling life that she deserves, will she experience the magic of relationships, and so, so much more.

It is also in my experience through working as a counsellor with children on the spectrum that they constantly feel misunderstood, misrepresented and struggle with self-esteem, bullying and self-harm.

I want to walk for autism to improve more awareness and understanding, but largely I want to create more acceptance. I wish that we would think twice before labelling a child awkward or naughty, and I wish that we would be more curious as to what may be going on for the parent who you see struggling with their child at Tescos. I wish that companies would make more adjustments for the sensory needs for their autistic employees, and I wish that more autistic people and their families were able to access the resources and support they deserve.

I have a lot of hope that things will improve for autistic children and adults and that’s why I work in this field, as I want to contribute to that. Every step I take I am hoping to walk towards a better life for people on the spectrum, and I thank you for helping me to do that.

❤️😊

I'm walking for our beautiful Nahla-Rae

I’m taking part in the Walk for Autism challenge. I’ll be walking 10,000 steps a day from 26 March to 2 April. Walk for Autism is a fundraising challenge run by Autism Initiatives Group. Autism Initiatives Group is working towards a world where every person on the autism spectrum has the support they need to thrive, every opportunity to fulfil their potential and a supportive, inclusive community to live in.

Every little helps to make a difference. Thank you!
