Walking for Autism

Walk for Autism is a fundraising challenge run by Autism Initiatives Group. Autism Initiatives Group is working towards a world where every autistic person has the support they need to thrive, every opportunity to fulfil their potential and a supportive, inclusive community to live in.

I'll be walking a total of 10,000 steps a day 26th March and 2nd April to raise money for this charity.

Any donation big or small is greatly appreciated 😊

Walking for myself, my daughter and the Autism community in general

Autism has become a very popular subject within our household in recent years.

I didn't know anything about Autism until my daughter was born in 2019. I was a first time mom being told not to compare babies and not to worry at the moment even though there were red flags in my mind.

I watched on double questioning myself every time she regressed, every time a friends baby would meet the next development milestone which my daughter did not. But time and time again I was told not to compare and not to worry.
Just to put it in context my daughter never rolled over once, she never ever crawled and when people said hello to her she would scream and cry. She would also make a groaning noise which we have since found out is her stimming. She eventually learnt to walk and talk all be it very late. All the while I wondered what I was doing wrong and felt ashamed as if my parenting was the reason. I felt embarrassed when she would scream in public or when she wouldn't want to play or talk to any other children or adults for that matter.
She was very attached to me as her main caregiver and even though I love being her everything this was and continues to be exhausting.

When she went to nursery she struggled to settle, it took a very very long time for her to do so. She only just started to talk out by the time it was time to leave for school. I would have some of her friends say to me "why doesn't she speak to us" which was hard to answer.

Her traits became more obvious when she went to school. She struggled socially to speak up, she struggled with transitions and she was stimming alot. She also had and still has many issues with her speech. Her school noticed this straight away and she went on to the SEN list, they have been amazing with giving her extra support, luckily this means things have settled down quite abit for her at school however I believe she is now masking to fit in with her peers. She will come home and have epic meltdowns over the smallest of things and she will wake in the night frequently and grind her teeth very loudly throughout the night.

As shes gone through her life so far I have noticed things which seemed all too relatable to myself. I noticed that some of the things she was doing I had also been doing throughout my life also. Looking back I cant believe how it wasn't obvious to those around me. Because of this I am currently being referred for an Audhd diagnosis.

The label doesn't bother me however I am trying to understand myself more and find support for myself and also get the support for my daughter that she needs to help aid her through school and the rest of her life.

I am also raising funds for the autism community as there are so many people, adults and children struggling daily and I understand how that can feel.

Please help me if you can raise funds and awareness for this more than deserving cause.
