As many people know, Bobby received his autism diagnosis at the end of last year. It seems like a good year to take part in the Walk for Autism challenge to raise money to support people with autism in the UK and, most importantly, raise awareness, understanding and acceptance.

A bit about Bobby! Bobby is the most lovable, quirky, funny, happy, noisy and special little boy, he brings so much joy and pride to our lives, we are so lucky to call him ours and love him will all of our hearts. He loves trains, cars, monsters inc, letters, numbers, being outside and most importantly, custard creams! He regulates by spinning and swinging and stims by flapping his arms and legs. He struggles to understand boundaries and discipline which causes major meltdowns, often aimed at Esme who is hands down the best sister in the whole wide world. She is simply incredible with him 🩷.
Bobby is what is most commonly known as “pre verbal” he says a few words and phrases and is a “Gestalt Language Processor” which in turn means his speech, communication and understanding is delayed for his age and the way we speak to and communicate with Bobby is very different to how we did with Esme. This makes day to day tasks and activities with him extremely challenging. We are incredibly lucky to be supported by wonderful family and friends who accept Bobby for the amazing boy he is but bringing up a child with special needs can be difficult (yet so fulfilling) to say the least.
The world is beginning to be more aware of hidden disabilities and 99% of the people I come across are considerate, knowledgable and accepting but there is still a way to go. I have had to do a lot of my own research around autism and what we can do to make sure we have all the tools and information to help Bobby live a happy and full life, there still isn’t enough common knowledge about autism and what can done to make life easier for autistic people and their families.
I wouldn’t change Bobby for the world and I know I can’t single handedly change the world for Bobby either, but hopefully raising some awareness for autism and everything it means and brings helps open up the conversations and makes the world he will grow up in more compassionate towards people like him.

I’m not asking for anyone to read up on autism or even donate to my fundraising page, but I am asking for you to show empathy (not sympathy) to autistic people and their families, to raise your children to be accepting of other kids that may be different to them, include them as much as they’ll allow and just be kind.
