EHCP News for Apollo!

Apollo just got his final EHCP through 🥳 This hopefully means he can look forward to a neuro-affirming education with boundless movement breaks and a forest school 🌲

I can't imagine how crushed I'd be if I couldn't give Apollo a safe and happy education but this unfortunately is the case for lots of parents. I've heard so many EHCP horror stories throughout the process and whilst I'm primarily doing my walk for Apollo, I *really* want to draw attention to the kids falling through the cracks and having an inadequate and often traumatic school experience so please donate/share/chat about it, big waves 💙

First Day🚶‍♀️

As life with a SEN child can be unpredictable and one must wake up and go with the flow each day, I've decided it would be sensible to do my steps as and when I can!

Yesterday was just this type of auspicious day. I dropped Apollo off at preschool (roughly 2 miles each way) and then headed to Longcroft Woods. Despite the litter and alarming crime rates at Longcroft, it will always feel like a magical place to me since I used to frolick there so much as a child (my Nan's back garden backed right on to the woods).

I took some pictures of the rainy signs of new life, I'll upload them on my Instagram @capturedbytethys

I walked roughly 8.4km and according to a steps calculator I've found that takes into account my sex, height and pace, have walked 10604 steps.

I have so far acquired one blister on my right toe, easily remedied by a Sainsbury's plaster.

PEACE 💙

I'm walking FOR and most likely WITH Apollo 🚀

I've always been blessed to be surrounded by neurodivergent friends but as many of you know, my incredible three and a half year old also has ASD with high support needs.

Whilst many of Apollo's ASD traits are gifts and he should always be accepted for who he is, he is not without his challenges. Both things can be true and I hope events like these help facilitate more conversations that make our world more neurospicy friendly and more parent of neurospicy friendly (less funny looks and noise complaints please).

Every professional I've met in our diagnosis and support journey has been incredible, more support and recognition is deserved for the CDC, educational psychologists, specialist health visitors, key workers, sencos, play therapists (Portage) and speech therapists- you've all been so kind in uncertain times however I'm also advocating for bigger changes behind the scenes to shorten wait times and provide families with more support and answers in between support needs recognition and diagnosis as well as a bit of training and quality control for more than a few "professionals" I met before our diagnosis journey.

Additionally, we in a way are privileged due to Apollo having clear cut support needs, but lots of children are falling through the cracks due to limited spaces in SEN schools and limited funding to support these children in mainstream schools, we need to be talking about this too 💙
